Christmas memories of the Lakeshore Teachers’ College

Recently, I discovered a Christmas card from the Lakeshore Teachers’ College that had been sent to me in the 1970s. I was a member of the staff during that decade, and retain fond memories of the “Victorian Christmas” that the budding future teachers performed. Both staff and students participated in recreating the music, costumes, and customs of the 19th century. I also remember the “drops” of rum that somehow found their way into the eggnog.

I have been retired from teaching now for 23 years, but I still consider my years at the Lakeshore College to be the happiest and most instructive years of my career. Since retiring, I have continued to pursue my interests in promoting the history of Toronto. Some teachers may remember a Sunday morning in the 1970s, when I was leading a walking tour of historic Toronto, and because the participants were large in numbers, the security guards at Osgoode Hall threatened to call the police as they thought it was a student demonstration.
