The origins of the Canadian celebration of Thanksgiving have no connection with the Pilgrim Fathers of Massachusetts. Our tradition stems from the British observance of “home and harvest.” Even today, Harvest Festival Services are held in churches throughout Britain, often followed by a Harvest Meal. The photographs in this post were taken on Thanksgiving Sunday in Metropolitan United Church on Queen Street East. The collourful display surrounding the altar stirred memories of my childhood, when fruits and grains created cornucopias of the harvest that delighted the eye.
